TIRE SELECTION
ALL-TERRAIN vs. MUD-TERRAIN
Choosing the right tire is a one of the most important choices you’ll make when preparing your Jeep for
off-road use. Most people select either all-terrain or mud-terrain tire. Other tire choices exist, but these
two types of tires cover the needs of 99.9% of all off-roaders.
Bigger isn’t always better and a mud-terrain tire is not always the better option. How a tire looks won’t
get you over the rock, through the mud, or to the end of the trail. Tire performance that matches your
driving style and the terrain you’ll be spending most of your time in are the most important aspects of
tire selection. Research, talk to other Jeepers, and, above all, be honest with yourself about what you
need from your tires.
ALL-TERRAIN TIRES
As the name indicates, all-terrain tires are designed to provide considerable traction over a wide range
of terrains. The less aggressive tread design provides a quieter highway ride than mud-terrain tires and
offers better handling on pavement as well. All-terrain tires are ideal for:
• Long-distance overlanding expeditions.
• Intermittent trail-to-highway driving. BALANCED TREAD PATTERN
• 4x4 trucks built for hauling or towing. Allows the tire to perform well
• Winter conditions. in both off-road and on-road
situations, earning these tires
the name “all-terrain”.
SIDEWALL LUGS
Act like paddles to add
considerable traction on mud
and soft ground compared to
street tires.
MORE SIPES
Increase the number of
biting edges, meaning
more traction in winter
conditions.
