east mojave heritage trail

The East Mojave Heritage Trail (EMHT) is one of the premier overlanding routes in the United States. Initially created by historian Dennis Casebier and the Friends of the Mojave Road, as a follow-up to the popular Mojave Road trail, it was completed in the 1980s and is a comprehensive tour through some of the most remote portions of the East Mojave Desert. In its original form, the EMHT covered 660 miles.

The EMHT encompasses four segments and is discoverable through four hardcover guidebooks that provide historical facts, information on local flora and fauna, detailed geographic descriptions, as well as cumulative mileage along the route.

With the implementation of the 1994 Desert Protection Act, which established the Mojave National Preserve and designated Wilderness Areas, the trail was closed in at least 13 places impacting a minimum of 75 miles of trail – thus rendering the guidebooks useless.

In 2019 the EMHT was revived by avid adventurer Billy Creech, under the direction of Dennis Casebier, before his passing in 2021. The new, compliant route now encompasses 733 miles through some of the most significant historical sites, geology, terrain, and flora and fauna that the Mojave Desert has to offer. New supplemental guides are used in conjunction with the original guidebooks and allows adventurers to complete the modified route today.

Please join off-road journalist and President of the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association, Sean P. Holman, on this unforgettable adventure as he guides you through EMHT Segments 1 & 2 in the spring, and Segments 3 & 4 in the fall, narrating the trail and sharing his knowledge with you. Each day we will stop in a notable place for camp and spend our evenings the way the homesteaders and miners did 150 years ago. When the sun comes up, we will be back on the trail, covering more ground and uncovering some of the hidden gems of the Mojave.
